If you guessed Chichen Itza, then you are right! The first time I visited these famous Mayan ruins, I was just a kid (when I called it Chicken Pizza – shame on me!) and visitors were still allowed to climb the pyramids as you can see in this postcard. The pyramids have been closed off for climbing since 2006 and that’s probably a good thing. I remember thinking they were a bit dangerous and hoping that I wouldn’t become a self-sacrifice. Egotistical reasons aside, it is also important to protect this UNESCO world heritage site so that future generations can continue to learn about its remarkable history.
